Paralympics in Tokyo - QOA celebrating the Irish paralympians' achievements

Queen of Angels supporting Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games

Here at Queen of Angels Primary school we are so proud to have a very special connection with the Paralympic Games.

David Malone, brother of our very own Ms. Malone is swim coach for gold medallist Ellen Keane and silver medallist Nicole Turner. This year 29 Irish Paralympian athletes represented Ireland in Tokyo. Team Ireland went on to win an impressive 4 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal in this year’s games.

David himself is a former Paralympian gold and silver medallist. He participated in four consecutive Paralympic games, starting with the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia where he went on to win a silver medal. David won gold at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney. In 2004 David also went on to win a silver medal in Athens in the 100-metre backstroke event. David held the world record for the 100-metre backstroke for ten years.

David is now the Director of Sport for Paralympics Ireland and is a huge advocate for encouraging and inspiring young people to take part in sporting events and achieve success.

On Friday the 3rd of September Queen of Angels Primary School decided to dress in green, white, and gold colours to show our support for our Paralympians. Children made cards and banners displaying the athlete’s names. Teachers inspired children to learn about the history of the Paralympics and each class took part in Paralympic themed activities such as wordsearches, colouring, word scramble, quizzes, comprehensions and writing activities.

A great day of fun was had by all, and the children loved supporting and congratulating Team Ireland for their great success and participation in this year’s Paralympic games.
