Nurture Room: Sunflowers!

Good morning,

Today I want to talk to you about gardening and growing something in your garden.

During the lockdown, I have been growing a few different types of vegetables and a few fruits. I am finding it very enjoyable.

At the beginning, I found it quite hard to get what I needed and I had to ask our local gardener questions about what I needed to do.

I learned that flowers, plants and vegetables need a few things to grow: they need soil, water, air and sunlight.

Luckily we have had lots of sunlight these last few weeks, so everything is growing really well.

I have attached a few pictures above of my first time growing sunflowers:

-picture 1 is of the packet of sunflower seeds.

-picture 2 is of the seeds themselves; they are a white colour and quite big.

-picture 3 is the 3 sunflower pots after about 10 days. It is fun to watch them grow.

-picture 4 is of the sunflowers today.

I would like you to try and grow a sunflower:

What you need is:

-Some sunflower seeds….I bought mine in Lidl!

-Some garden compost.

-A small pot.

Then you fill your pot up with compost. You make a small hole in the middle with your finger; about 1 inch deep. You put the seed in and cover with soil. Then you place the plot in a sunny spot and see what happens. Make sure to water the seed every couple of days so that the compost doesn’t dry out.

Below, I have a few activities that you can try based on the topic of sunflowers. Try as many as you like….

1) Try this worksheet on what all plants need to grow:

2) Cut and paste the four stages in the growth of a flower:

3) Here is a Spring Flowers Wordsearch for you…

4) You can use these 2 worksheets to track how your sunflower is growing…describe what you used, what you did to help it grow… and how it grew..The 2nd worksheet allows you to write a diary about your sunflower plant

5) Finally, if you want to relax and be mindful, try these flower colouring pages:

I hope you are able to grow your own sunflower and that you enjoyed the work I included above. Please try as many activities as you like and remember, there is no pressure to finish everything.

Maybe take time in your garden to notice pretty flowers as they bloom over the next few weeks.

Thank you!
