Hi everyone, 19th April 2020
We hope that you enjoyed the Easter Break and that you got some delicious treats from the Easter Bunny! We hope that you are all doing well and keeping safe. Thank you all so much for doing all your work so well and for being such a great support and help at home. We know that you are all making such a big effort to be extra good at this time. We hope that you are enjoying the activities that we have been sending. Please find below a list of some more activities to keep you busy over the next while. Please don’t worry if you can’t finish all the work.
We really miss you all so much and we know how hard it must be not being able to play with your friends. We miss hearing all your stories and we can’t wait to see you soon so we can listen to everybody’s adventures at home over the past few weeks.
We hope that you are able to try some home baking, playdough, art and other fun activities at home. Activities like these are wonderful ways of learning about how the world works.
Wishing you all the best and we really cannot wait to see you all again very soon.
Best wishes,
Miss Hannigan and Miss Duignan

Reading:
- Skills Book pg. 104 and 105 Holiday Homes in Ireland. Discuss with your child what the ‘Camping Fun’ story will be about. Read 4-6pages every day and discuss what has happened. Ask questions to ensure they understand what they have read. Sequence different events in the story.
- Read the story ‘Camping Fun’ from the class reader, p 22-40.
Skills Book activities p.90-95 (one page per day). These activities are based on the entire story and can be done after they have read the whole story)
Comprehensions on K5 learning for 2nd class >> Click here for K5Learning << (This website also has the answers. Please ensure your child gives full sentences for answers). Children can choose the comprehensions they would like to do. (Continue with these comprehensions, maybe one or two per week)
Reading - ensure it's something your child enjoys and talk about it. Older children may be able to technically read well and can read solo but they still require chatting time. Children can even discuss their books together, it doesn't need to be 1:1. Older children can read to or with younger children. You can access eBooks online from your local library.

Spelling Workbook Week 27 and 28
- Discuss the letter patterns with your child. Can they think of other words with a similar sound?
- Remember our spelling stations we do in class? Can you try to make any of the new words you are learning with playdough ,pasta, shaving foam, chalks or any other items in your house? You could even trace the new words on your window or the mirror in the bathroom when it gets a little foggy.
Other ideas: Check the common words are correct but don't worry about spelling too much. Aim to keep your feedback positive and encouraging. Younger kids can draw and annotate. These are still writing skills. In these unprecedented times it could be interesting to look back at diaries of this period. Diaries could be written comics, poems, whatever works.
Math:
Mental Maths:
Mental Math Book Week 27 and 28. Do one a day.
Continue Counting in 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, 5’s, 6’s, 10’s.
Remember the game ‘Buzz’ we used to play in class, maybe you could explain the rules to your family at home and try to play it.
Maths Activities:
Symmetry: Try to find as many items at home that have symmetry. Collect these items and find the line of symmetry in each one. You might even find patterns of symmetry in the clothes, blankets or book covers that you have at home.
Art activity: Try some blob painting with paint and sponges to create some symmetry art.
- Place a blob of paint in the centre of a page.
- Fold page in half while paint is still wet
- Unfold your paper
- Discuss what kind of patterns have been formed, is it symmetrical? What would happen if you folded the paper into quarters and then unfolded it?
Mathemagic Symmetry p.46 and 47 (review)
Revision:
Subtraction with renaming. (Remind them of the steps)
Step 1: Look at the units side
Step 2: Do I need to rename?? Say the rhyme!! (More on top, no need to stop. More on the floor, go next door and get 10 more. Numbers the same, zeros the game.)
Step 3: Complete the sum.
If you do not have access to a printer you could help the children write sums into their copies , using examples from the Mathemagic textbook pages 87-94 (we have completed some of these in class already, please complete these pages if not finished)

Maths - Real life maths with money, measurement for cooking/ baking and number facts. There are lots of games out there for number facts such as playing games like UNO or Monopoly together, spending time playing educational games online or a little 1:1 time.
Gaeilge:
Watch a little TG4 or Cúla4. Pick a cartoon your child enjoys. You can also record a scannán (film) that may be on and watch it in 10/15 min chunks. Alvin and the Chipmunks also feature, as does Spongebob! https://www.seideansi.ie/aiseanna-eile.php
You may have seen the RTE homeschool programme which is broadcast each day. This week they are focusing on the theme of Eadai (clothes). The children have already started this topic in school and this Irish language section of the show would be good revision.
SESE:
People in the locality- Hospitals
We are all aware of the amazing work that the wonderful doctors and nurses are doing right now to keep us all safe and well during this time. The next theme in our Geography book is all about hospitals so we thought we could try a few activities based on this theme.
- Collect as many words that you think of relating to the theme of ‘The Hospital’ here are a few to start you off; doctor, nurse, patient, medicine, waiting area, stitches (challenge; see how many you can collect!) write all your words down on a large sheet of paper, maybe you could write each word in a different colour or maybe even draw some little pictures to go with each word.
- Draw a map of a hospital, what do you think it would look like. What symbols could you add in to your map?
- Pretend you are a doctor, nurse or somebody working in a hospital. Write a diary entry about your day and the different things that you do.
- Science bit! Do you know what your pulse is? Can you find it? Can you use a timer to see how many times it beats per minute?
- Create a thank you poster for all the Healthcare staff in Ireland. Make it as colourful as you can.

It's great for physical health and mental health also!
Art
The following Art Activities could be completed at home:
Design a poster with a slogan to encourage people to stay safe during this time
- What are the important things we need to be doing now ( hint; washing our hands)
- Your slogan needs to be catchy i.e it might rhyme.
- Make sure your poster is full of colour
- You could hang your poster on your window so everyone could see it.
Please take good care of your poster we would love to see them all when we are back in school!! You’re all such great artists!

Stick the letters on the wall with blue tac or Velcro on the carpet.
2. Magnetic letters race
Sort all the magnetic letters that are the same, whoever sorts the letters fastest wins
Remember only 4 letter names at a time e.g. Aaaaa , MmmmM, Bbbbb,Yyyyyy,
Try to have a letter sort race with 4 different letters every day.
3. Letter and sentence formation practice.
Writing letters /words /sentences using shaving foam or a wet paint brush and water on a black
board, or on the footpath. Or try writing with chalk on the footpath in your garden.
Reading and word work.
1. Read aloud every day.
2. Flashlight fun game
Turn off the lights; use a flashlight to read the words you know.

you can erase it. The winner erases the most words.
4. Snap game.
Two sets of identical words (just written on paper is ok) and match the words. If more than two
people are playing, make extra sets of words.
Writing ideas
1. Write a new last page for your favourite story ( you can write more than one page if you like).
Now you are an author too!
2. Talk about and then write a story about the things your teddy likes to do.
Write about teddy's favourite games, favourite cartoon , favourite food ,fun things teddy likes to do,
silly things teddy likes to do, a day when teddy was very kind or a day when teddy was very naughty .
3. Make a book about teddy now that you are an author. Don't forget to illustrate your stories.
4. Cut up story.
Write your own sentence, ask your mum or dad to cut up the sentence, now you have to put the
sentence back together again by yourself.
Challenge
How many words can you write correctly by yourself in five minutes?
Try the challenge every day.
Remember to ask mum or dad to check your words every day.
I can't wait to read your stories!
