This week our 5th and 6th class students received a visit from our local community Gardaí. Garda Gemma and Garda Linda spoke to the students about the dangers associated with bonfires and fireworks. They showed a video showing what can happen when children play with fireworks. They continued to emphasise the dangers of using fireworks because every Halloween, An Garda Síochána and the Fire Service receive a high number of callouts to bonfires and firework-related incidents. An Garda Síochána are urging parents to stay safe and not to buy illegal fireworks for their children this Halloween. The Gardaí also spoke to the children about what they should do if they see something dangerous during the Halloween break. They told them about the very important fire safety technique if a child's costume catches fire: "Stop, Drop and Roll". Here is a summary of their very informative and beneficial talk to the children:
- If you are attending an organised fireworks and bonfire display, stay a safe distance away as wind can carry sparks long distances
- Young children should be accompanied by an adult when trick-or-treating
- If you are trick-or-treating, skip houses with no lights on
- Wear reflective material so that you can clearly be seen by motorists and cyclists
- Fire resistant materials should be used for costumes
- Keep pets indoors on Halloween night
- Have fun, Be Safe!
