The week before Halloween was a busy time for Queen of Angels footballers. On Wednesday 23 October 2019 a boys’ team and a girls’ team from 3rd and 4th classes made their debut in the FAI Primary Schools Futsal Blitz.
The matches where held at the newly refurbished Damian Duff Park at Leicester Celtic’s ground in Nutgrove. There were teams from 6 other neighbouring schools participating in the event. For the girls this was the first time many of them played on a football team. They put in a very creditable performance ending the day with a win, a draw and a very narrow loss. The team consisted of Lola, Eshanna, Katja and Ella from 4th Class and Alyssa, Ellie, Kisha and Seena from 3rd class.
It was goals galore from the boy’s team as they won 4 of their 5 matches. Tighe from 4th class, lead the way scoring in every game and he was ably assisted by his class colleagues, Ayan, Jarred, Kieran, Tadzio, Finn and Adam with Scott giving an outstanding display in goals. The matches were exciting and played in good spirit with all the players getting plenty of opportunities to showcase their skills.
It was back up to Leicester Celtic on Thursday 24 October 2019 where a mixed team of boys and girls from 5th and 6th Classes took on our good friends from Good Shepherd. This was part of the FAI’s Show Racism the Red Card Programme. The match proved to be a very entertaining affair with plenty of scoring chances for both teams. The first half ended with the score at 1 goal each. Good Shepherd went into the lead early in the second half and scored twice more to go 4 -1 up as time ticked away. Taylor from 6th class pulled a goal back and 2 late goals from her classmate Ryan saw Queen of Angels earn a deserved draw. Both teams are to be applauded for a very sporting encounter, with a draw being a fair result. After the game the players were presented with certificates to recognise their participation in this anti-racism campaign.
Our thanks to Thomas Morgan, the local FAI Development Officer, for organising these events and to Leicester Celtic for the use of their facilities.
