Queen of Angels Reign Supreme
Thursday 16 June 2022 was one of the finest days in the school’s football history. Our 5th and 6th class students took part in the inaugural “Jonathon Harris Nugent” Football Tournament hosted by St. Mary’s FC at their grounds in Moreen Park. Our Girls’ team carried off the Shield Trophy with a hard fought 1-0 victory in the final. We entered 2 boys’ teams. One of which was beaten at the Shield semi-final stage in a penalty shootout. However our other team went through the tournament unbeaten and scooped the main award the “Jonathon Harris Nugent” Cup. There were wild celebrations when the cup was presented to the boys by Jonathon’s Mam Jennifer. Jonathon was a former pupil of Queen of Angels before his sudden death in 2014, so it seemed fitting that the first winners of the cup were his old school. Together with Queen of Angels, teams from St. Olaf’s, St. Mary’s and Our Lady of the Wayside took part. Great credit must go to St. Mary’s FC for the way the event was organised and for the sporting way in which the games were played. The club intend to make this an annual event and if that is the case, it will give the next generation of footballers in Queen of Angels something to aspire to.
