5th Class Work

25th-29th May 2020

Hi 5th class,

I hope you’re all still doing well. Below is the work for this week.

All worksheets and power points are on this new Padlet link: https://padlet.com/emmakaneteacher/hwslvjo5ydc2hvue

I have made a second Padlet link to allow you to continue to access any work I set last week, this week.

You do not have to print anything off. Any sums or questions can be written into your copies.

Don’t forget to tune into the Home School Hub every day from (11am-12pm).

As usual, you do not have to complete all activities on this sheet. Just try and get whatever you can done! My school e-mail is funfitnessqoa@gmail.com. Your parents/guardians can contact me using that e-mail address with any questions at all.

RTÉ Home School Hub and activities:

Day

RTÉ Home School Hub Topic (5th class)

Individual Activity

Monday 25th May

Drama-Apple Tree

Take part in the drama lesson.

This lesson is about how movement can be used for storytelling.

Tuesday 26th May

Geography-Climate change

Watch RTÉ Home School Hub lesson: deforestation.

You are going to write a piece of persuasive writing. You can choose whether you are for (agree with) or against (do not agree with) the motion: ‘Deforestation is bad for society.’

1. Read ‘Making Notes Top Tips’ on Padlet link.

2. Practice taking notes by asking someone to read one of the passages in the ‘Taking Notes’ document on the Padlet link.

3. Research information for your debate (for or against). There is a power point with information called ‘Deforestation’ on the Padlet link. Practice your not-taking skills throughout your research.

4. Structure your persuasive writing piece by writing an introduction, 3 separate paragraphs for 3 different points (remember-don’t repeat the same point!) and a conclusion.

5. To help you structure your three points, see the ‘Point, Evidence, Explanation’ document on Padlet.

6. Study ‘The Rules of Debating Poster’ on Padlet to help you structure your writing.

7. There is also a ‘Deforestation Debate’ power point on Padlet to help you with your points.

Study each of the documents on Padlet first and then write your written piece.

Wednesday 27th May

Gaeilge-Fan sa Bhaile

Watch RTÉ School Hub lesson.

Make flashcards of the new words you learn during the lesson. You draw a picture of the word and write it in Irish. If you are unsure of the spelling, you can use https://www.tearma.ie/ to help you translate the word from English to Irish and find the spelling.

Thursday 28th May

History-The Renaissance

Watch lesson on RTÉ Home School Hub.

Pretend I am an alien visiting Earth for the first time. Write a paragraph on all you have learned about the Renaissance from the Home School Hub.

Friday 29th May

P.E.-SPORTS DAY!

Take part in the Olympics Sports Day on the Home School Hub! Get moving and HAVE FUN!

English:

  • English in Practice: 1 day per day. Continue with daily exercises. (5 days completed by Friday)
  • Spelling Workbook: Complete next spelling list and workbook pages for it. Write each word into 1 sentence.

4 extra spellings: remain, couldn’t, climbed, continued. Write each word into sentences also.

  • Grammar topic: Dictionary skills. See worksheet on Padlet. There are 5 tasks on the worksheet. Try one per day!
  • Please complete one page of handwriting in your workbook each day.
  • If you are one of the children in the class who does not write in cursive (I have told you if you don’t) then I would like you to practice your handwriting by writing out the first two paragraphs on page 57 ‘Who Discovered America?’ (words: ‘Most’-‘after Columbus’).
  • Reading: I have uploaded 2 documents: ‘Reading Comprehension Skills Challenge Cards’ and ‘Reading Comprehension Skills Challenge Cards with Sentence Starters.’ I would like you to complete the first 3 challenge cards (purpose, cause and effect, compare and contrast). Each of these challenge cards are asking you questions based on different types of answers. If you struggle with forming full sentences when answering reading comprehensions, you can use the ‘Reading Comprehension Skills Challenge Cards with Sentence Starters.’ This will give you a start to your answers. The answers are below each set of questions so you can check if you are correct. Don’t forget to use CUPS to self-correct all your written work.

Gaeilge:

  • New pronoun: 'do'-to
  • Learn off by heart. Write 3 times in your copy.

Do-to

Dom-to me

Duit-to you

Dó-to him

di-to her

Dúinn-to us

Daoibh -to you (pl)

Dóibh-to them

Give me your book-> Tabhair dom do leabhar.

Translate these sentences:

  1. Give him your book.
  2. Give her your book.
  3. Give them your book.
  4. Give us your book.

Answers are on Padlet to check your work.

  • Power point ‘E-Leathanach 352’. 2 stories from the news on a power point. If you click the speaker you will hear me reading the stories and translating them. There are 4 questions for each story to answer. The answers to each question are at the end of the power point.

Compete all questions you can do.

  • Mental Maths: Complete 1 day per day (have next 5 days completed by Friday).
  • Tables: Keep practicing all your tables. Try and get quicker at answering your tables. Set yourself speed targets.

If you do different maths to the rest of the class, you are going to continue practicing long division.

As you spent last week trying out long division, I want you to continue practicing the questions on the Padlet board from last week: https://padlet.com/emmakaneteacher/o5friez0vfihsl35

There is a power point that you can click through where I explain how to complete long division step by step. I would like you to take the week to practice these questions. If you are confident in long division after your work last week, take a look at the long division word problems on the same padlet link from last week.

Drama: Continue learning your lines for the musical. Try one of these fun scripts with anyone at home! http://www.teachingheart.net/readerstheater.htm

P.E.

Go Noodle: parents/guardians can sign up for Go Noodle for free here. It has a range of workout videos, yoga, mindfulness and lots more. It is very important that we stay as active as we can during these strange times. Hopefully this link helps with that! https://www.gonoodle.com/good-energy-at-home-kids-games-and-videos/

Well done to all of you for all the work you are doing at home. You should be very proud of yourselves!

Stay safe and well,

Ms Kane.
