5th Class Work
5th May-8th May 2020
Hi 5th class,
I hope you all enjoyed the bank holiday weekend. The latest update is that we won’t be back in school until September. So please try and do a little bit of school work whenever it suits your parents and guardians each week. Below is the work for this week.
All worksheets and power points are on this Padlet link: https://padlet.com/emmakaneteacher/o5friez0vfihsl35
You do not have to print anything off. Any sums or questions can be written into your copies.
Don’t forget to tune into the Home School Hub every day from (11am-12pm)! Let’s make use of all the great home-learning opportunities that are available to us! There are follow on activities below for each day that you can use to further your learning from each episode.
As usual, you do not have to complete all activities on this sheet. Just try and get whatever you can done! My school e-mail is funfitnessqoa@gmail.com. Your parents/guardians can contact me using that e-mail address with any questions at all. If you would like any work corrected, you can send an attachment as a typed document or a photo of your work to me and I will correct it as soon as possible. Again, this might not be possible for you all, so this is optional for you. Please don’t feel any pressure coming from me to get through all your work as I am sure you are learning loads from this experience outside of this work also.
To the parents, thank you for your co-operation during these very stressful times. Please know that I understand the pressure that you are all under between looking after your children during a lockdown as well as working from home. Please remember that anything you do with your child this week is valuable, even if it is not from this list of work.
Remember 5th class to plan out your work for each day of the week. This is a great way to practice independent learning for when you are in secondary school!

Individual Activity

Tuesday 5th May
|
Geography-The Sun
|
Watch RTÉ Home School Hub for explanation.
We have covered this in class already, however it is an important topic and good to refresh our memory on why we have our 4 different seasons. Read pages 62-65 in your Geography book.
Read the power point on the Padlet link. Write a few sentences to sum up all you have learned about the Sun.
|
Wednesday 6th May
|
History-Myths
|
Watch RTÉ School Hub lesson.
Read ‘The Children of Lir’ story on the Padlet Link. Re-tell the story on the ‘Children of Lir Activity’ sheet on the Padlet link. There are 3 different sheets in the same document. You just have to choose one of them to write on. Not all three. You can also just write it in your copy.
Tip: Highlight/underline the key events in the story before writing it in your own words. Please don’t copy the story. The point of this exercise is to practice telling a story in your own words.

Thursday 7th May
|
Maths-Time and Speed
|
Watch lesson on RTÉ School Hub.
This will be about time, difference and speed. There is a power point explaining how to calculate time, difference and speed on the Padlet link. There are then 3 worksheets to practice calculating time, difference and speed. You do not have to print the worksheets off. You can complete the questions in your copy and skip the colouring bit. But if you can print them off, then the colouring activity might bring some fun to the sums!
*Anyone who does not usually complete the same maths as the rest of the class, see details below for your own maths topics.

Friday 8th May
|
English-Parsing
|
Types of words. You have all written down the definitions of different types of words in the back of your English in Practice. This is a link to a power point on Twinkl that I cannot fit on the Padlet board unfortunately. But it recaps on the different types of words as a refresher! (https://www.twinkl.ie/resource/t2-e-41633-ks2-word-class-sorting-activity-pack It is free to download using this link!).
There is a 'Word Class Sorting' worksheet on the Padlet link to practice identifying types of words. Again, you can sort the words in your copies as opposed to printing them off and colouring them in!
|
English:
- English in Practice: 1 day per day. Continue with daily exercises. (5 days completed by Friday)
- Spelling Workbook: Complete next spelling list and workbook pages for it. Write each word into 1 sentence.
4 extra spellings: quite, type, themselves, temperature. Write each word into sentences also.
- Story: Plan out story using worksheet on Padlet link. There is a ‘how to write a good story checklist’ on the Padlet link also to help you with your plan.
- Please complete one page of handwriting in your workbook each day.
- If you are one of the children in the class who does not write in cursive (I have told you if you don’t) then I would like you to practice your handwriting by writing out a copy page of text from the Leo Varadkar reading comprehension as neat as you can. That means, finger-spacing, clear letters, full stops and taking your time. Please e-mail me a photo of your work so I can see your handwriting improving.
- Reading Comprehension: Leo Varadkar. How much do we all know about the leader of our country who will hopefully lead us out of this pandemic? There is a document on the Padlet link that has 3 different reading comprehensions in it. Each one has the same information in it but the reading and the questions get more difficult in each one. Please complete one of these reading comprehensions. You will have to decide which is the right level for you. Remember the 5 finger rule: if you read a page and don’t know 5 or more words, then it is too difficult for you. However, if you read a page and you know every word, it is too easy for you.
Gaeilge:
- Recap all Irish verbs in the present tense (Aimsir Laithreach). Ask your parents to test you on them. We usually do 15 questions in our verb tests each week.
- Power point ‘E-Leathanach 349’. 2 stories from the news on a power point. If you click the speaker you will hear me reading the stories and translating them. There are questions for each story to answer. If you would like me to correct these, you can e-mail me your answers.
Maths:
- Topic: time, distance and speed.
Aim for this week: calculate time, distance or speed using the other two. E.g. calculate time using distance and speed.
See Padlet link for power point and questions on a worksheet.
- Mental Maths: Complete 1 day per day (have next 5 days completed by Friday).
- Tables: Keep practicing all your tables. Try and get quicker at answering your tables. Set yourself speed targets.
If you don’t usually do the same Maths as the rest of the class:
- Please complete the recap sheet on long multiplication. There are also word problems to practice using long multiplication. Please try at least 5 of these word problems each day if you can. Don’t worry if they are too difficult. Just try your best. You will only improve with practice! You will find the sheets on Padlet under the title ‘Other Maths’. Please make sure you work on your tables to become quicker and quicker with them.
SESE:
- History: Myths and Legends-see the RTÉ School Hub activities above.
World War 2: Over the coming weeks we are going to learn about life during World War 2. To do that we need to re-visit what you learned in 3rd and 4th class about the events of World War 2. This week we will remember how it began? See power point on Padlet link. Write 5 sentences on how World War 2 began.
- Geography: The Sun-see RTÉ School Hub for activities above.
- Science: Mix and Separate. Read page 83-88. There are 2 investigations that the whole family can take part in (including baking!). If your parents have time in their busy schedule, this could be something you could have fun experimenting with Investigations 1 and 2 on pages 83, 84 and 85. Enjoy!
Art: Construction
Make a hat out of recyclable materials. Here is an example!
You can also follow Artzone’s weekly art classes here: https://www.artzone.ie/art-classes-dublin/artzone-live/ and on their Instagram page. Also, Don Conroy does weekly drawing classes on his YouTube channel also. All online links should be accessed by a parent/guardian before you use them.
Drama: Continue learning your lines for the musical. You will hopefully do your musical next year instead of this year. So, no one will be forgetting their lines! Try one of these fun scripts with anyone at home! http://www.teachingheart.net/readerstheater.htm
P.E.
Go Noodle: parents/guardians can sign up for Go Noodle for free here. It has a range of workout videos, yoga, mindfulness and lots more. It is very important that we stay as active as we can during these strange times. Hopefully this link helps with that! https://www.gonoodle.com/good-energy-at-home-kids-games-and-videos/
Remember, you have a homework journal. Use your homework journal to plan out what you are going to do each day. Independent learning is not easy. However, you will be so happy for this practice when you are in secondary school. I know we are all sharing computers with siblings, parents and guardians. So, there is no pressure to complete all activities. Remember, try to complete something each day to make it easier for you to come back to school when we all return in September. I have received some lovely messages and homework from some of you so I can see how busy you all are and how hard you are working. Well done! Please remember to stay safe and stay home.
Ms Kane.
