Look at the beautiful diya lamps made by Ms Martin's 6th class pupils to celebrate Diwali. A diya is a small oil lamp made of clay that uses a cotton wick soaked in ghee or oil. They are used in celebrations like Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, to symbolize the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Lit during prayers and festivals, diyas also welcome prosperity, knowledge, and good fortune, and can be decorated in many colors. The word "Diwali" means "row of lights," and lighting diyas is the most popular tradition during this festival. Many people light a diya as part of their daily prayers and rituals.
