A candle in the window - An Irish tradition

Many classes placed candles in their windows this year to continue this wonderful Irish tradition. What does it mean?

The act of placing a lighted candle in the window at Christmas has been an Irish tradition for centuries.

Every Christmas Eve people placed a single candle in the window. The candle lit the way for Mary and Joseph on their long journey to Bethlehem.

It also signalled Christmas had finally arrived and the wait of Advent was over.

It is also seen as a sign of welcome to travellers and visitors and as a light to remember those who have passed or are away from home.

It is a light to guide them home and remind them that someone is tending the fire and waiting for their safe return.
