Ms. Archer’s Fourth Class were invited down to St. Tiernan’s Secondary School over the past two Wednesdays to take part in science activities in Mr. Currie’s laboratory.
Last week, the children learned all about the science of a ball. Each pupil was given a squash ball and discovered how different temperatures affect the ball’s bounce. They placed the rubber balls in water of varying temperatures, using thermometers to measure the heat. With tongs, they removed the balls and observed the changes: when the water was cold, the balls bounced only slightly, but as the water reached close to 100°C, the balls became extremely hot and bounced much faster and higher. Mr. Currie was very impressed with the children’s curiosity and enthusiasm.
This week, the class returned to the lab to learn about fireworks. They had an amazing time exploring how different elements create different colours—such as copper, magnesium, sodium (salt), and other minerals found in the earth. Each child received a wooden stick and water, and then used a Bunsen burner to see how the elements produced bright, colourful flames. Dressed in their lab coats and goggles, the children followed all laboratory rules perfectly and gained a wonderful insight into how a real science lab operates in secondary school.
To finish off the day, the class enjoyed a treat—a stop at the park in Ballally on their way back, which they thoroughly enjoyed.
It was another fantastic science experience for Ms. Archer’s Fourth Class, and they behaved exceptionally well throughout.
